The antiulcer activity of ethanolic extract of Coccinia indica (Family - Cucurbitaceae) roots EECI was investigated in pylorus ligation induced ulcer in male Wistar rats. The parameters determined in the samples are the ulcer index, total acidity, free acidity, gastric volume. EECI at doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg p.o. produced significant inhibition of gastric lesions induced by pylorus ligation induced ulcer. The extract (200 and 400 mg / kg) showed a significant (P <0.01) reduction in gastric volume, ulcer index and free acidity compared with control. This current study suggests that Cocinia indica root extract has potential antiulcer activity. These results show that ethanolic extract has antiulcerogenic and ulcer healing properties, which might be due to its antisecretory activity. Further study on the plant is recommended.
